Composer, producer and sound alchemist Raz Mesinai makes music at the intersection of Dub and modern composition. As a solo artist and with his ensembles, he creates mythic performances evoking ancient rhythms with electronics, acoustic instruments and turntables. His recordings as Badawi have placed him on the forefront of the experimental electronic scene for over a decade, with remixes contributed by such artists as Kode 9, Shackleton, DJ Spooky and Headhunter, and Badawi remixes of Burning Spear, Arto Lindsay and Shackleton. He’s been a fixture of the downtown New York improvised music scene as well since the late nineties, collaborating with such luminaries as John Zorn, Mark Dresser, Elliott Sharp, DJ Olive and many others.

Mesinai's music has been performed at The Lincoln Center Festival, Zankel Hall, The Kitchen, the Next, Next Wave Festival (BAM), The Whitney Museum, ICA London, Saafelden Jazz Festival, Etnafest, Tonic, The Stone, The Winter Garden, and numerous underground clubs in New York and Europe, including Love, Soundlab, and the legendary Mars, Sound Factory, Limelight and Save the Robots. In recent years, his work has been commissioned and performed by The Kronos Quartet, Ethel, VIA, and cellist Maya Beiser. In 2002 his music received an honorary award in the Ars Electronica Digital Musics category.

Mesinai is also an accomplished film composer. He was a Sundance Composers’ Lab fellow in 2004, and has scored feature films, documentaries, and short films, including Sorry Haters (official selection Toronto Film Festival), Romantico (offical selection Sundance Film Festival) and The Projectionist, for which he won the Herb Alpert Award for Excellence in Music for Film. His music has also been featured in films by Ridley Scott, Jonathan Demme and Darren Aronofsky.

"How does this sound? Deadbeat's Radio Rothko : Scion's Arrange and Process Basic Channel Tracks :: Richie Hawtin's Decks, EFX & 909 : Jeff Mills's Live at the Liquid Room, Tokyo. Easy enough, right? Yet it isn't, not least because the circumstances this one comes out into are so different.

The comparisons are between classic mix CDs and a later one with a similar template and aim. At a time when Soundcloud will absorb us all, there's something special about (weird to type this) the old-fashioned mix CD. So many mixes abound online, at so many different skill levels, that it's easier than ever to appreciate the kind of work that goes into licensing (even handshake deals take time), selecting and whittling down a fully legal mix CD. Going those extra steps tends to mean more thinking about it along the way, a refining process crucial to a mix of this scope.

What Deadbeat sets out is a kind of Whitman's Sampler of dub, techno and minimal's intertwining paths, heavy on the Basic Channel family, with dabs from debtors like Pendle Coven and 2562. The mix takes its sweet, patient time establishing itself, a radically minimalist gesture in any era; the build-up is sweetly agitating, and the way it blossoms in different directions is clearly pre-meditated, without seeming clinical." - Michaelangelo Matos

We rarely go out of our way to congratulate Brooklyn-based musicians in these pages (they do enough of that themselves). But I have to hand it to the Agriculture, a Brooklyn label focused on out-there permutations of Jamaican dub run through Berlin techno, spazzy global pop and pirate radio crackle. They've put out two fantastic mixes that are a couple of the most sufficient party-in-a-box albums to cross my desk lately.

The first is "Solar Life Raft," a collaboration between DJ Rupture (who, not uncoincidentally, penned one of my favorite pieces of recent music writing) and Matt Shadetek. The record somehow finds space on the same shelf for mind-melt reggae from Jahdan Blakkamoore and Stagga's fractured dubstep as well as Luc Ferrari's noise sculpture and Gang Gang Dance's passport-stamp freakouts. Listening to "Solar Life Raft," you won't know whether to take pills and dance madly in a darkened room, write a dissertation on sonic-diaspora politics or strip to your skivvies and run through the spray from a broken fire hydrant.

"Radio Rothko," a collection of dubby techno compiled by the Canadian DJ Deadbeat, is by contrast about as pristine and focused a mix as electronica has seen lately. Rooted in the brittle, faded synth arpeggios and mechanized kick drums of the '90s Berlin duo Basic Channel, the mix ebbs along through Monolake's bleary subway-funk and 2562's creaky head-nods, while Basic Channel's phosphorescent throb binds it all together. The ever-articulate Philip Sherburne contributes some great liner notes, so I'll pass it off to him in saying it's "...a cold, reverberant thrum. The pulse of dub reggae running through Japanese-built machinery, filters frothing; the room tone suggestive of nothing so much as the untold empty structures in the recently-reunified city."

Deadbeat will release a new mix CD called Radio Rothko on Brooklyn's The Agriculture imprint later this year.

Comprising artists such as DeepChord, Monolake, Quantec and Pendle Coven, Radio Rothko presents a healthy mix of dub techno's classics and contemporaries, with a notable emphasis on the work of Basic Channel's Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald. The mix takes advantage of the music's spacious and atmospheric nature, bubbling up into a more dance floor-friendly centre before showcasing the dubbier end of the dub techno spectrum.

Radio Rothko will be Scott Monteith's first venture into the world of the commercial mix CD, and also marks his debut release for The Agriculture, the Brooklyn-based label that gave us dubby genre-benders like DJ Rupture's Uproot mix. He's also seen fit to include three of his own compositions, including new track "Port Of Rix" as well as a special edit of "As We Conquer" from his 2001 debut album Primordia.

One Step Beyond Wrap Up: "Twisted Cumbia, Latin Gabba, and Space Steppers Delight"

Though lacking a cameo from Jason Voorhees, every DJ killed it (wokka wokka) at our One Step Beyond series this past Friday the 13th. FADER friends DJ/Rupture, Matt Shadetek and Jahdan Blakkamoore, Maluca and Sonido Martines took turns hijacking the makeshift dance floor at the planetarium. Whether you were way up front or sneaking into the Mammals of North America exhibit, Sonido Martines’ twisted cumbia was inescapable and Maluca’s insane party starting helped more than a few audience members get real loose. By the time Shadetek and Blakkamoore took the stage, half the audience were trading dance moves under space lights. The other half wandered the museum’s halls, indulging their grade school selves by finding out who weighed 69 pounds on Mars as DJ/Rupture closed out the night.

Jace Clayton, a.k.a. DJ /Rupture, is a one-man musical Venn diagram, linking up genres, people, styles, and beats. After seven years in Spain, he felt the call of “the land of caffeine and stress” and returned here, where he’s fallen for cumbia (something you’re more likely to hear in Nueva York than Barcelona). He also co-founded the Dutty Artz D.J. and production crew, hosts a show “Mudd Up!” on WFMU, and last year released the acclaimed Uproot mix tape. DJ /rupture’s Favorite Cities and Songs via Flavorpill

On his Twitter profile, DJ /rupture, aka Jace Clayton, lists “dj * writer * jetlag king” as his occupations. And though he’s best known as the turntable mastermind behind albums like Uproot and Special Gunpowder and his latest release with Brooklyn producer Matt Shadetek, he wouldn’t be much of a DJ without the latter gigs. All three are intertwined: he’s written regularly for magazines like The Wire and N+1; and his recent piece for the latter, which landed in the 2009 Best Music Writing compilation, begins “I’ve DJed in over 20 countries…”

Access to music from the third world may be easy via the Internet, but Clayton’s discovery is often firsthand. In addition to DJing in over 30 countries now, he has spent much of the last decade living in Barcelona. It was his desire to be “caffeinated” that brought him back to New York City, and that brought him to make his new album with Shadetek, Solar Life Raft, with local musicians like Gang Gang Dance, Telepathe, and Nico Muhly.

One place I haven’t been is Sub-Saharan Africa,” he told us when we asked where he’s heading next. “I’d love to go to Côte d’Ivoire, I’d love to check out Johannesburg. I’ve been invited to play in Africa and all over the place, but I can’t just up and go and hang out in Dakar for a couple weeks on my own dime. I’m too busy. But that’s where my curiosity is highest. I’m been to Brazil before to do a couple shows in Rio de Janeiro, which is less surprising than going to Africa would be, but it’s still a really incredible city, so I’m psyched to be going there again.”

Last year, Pitchfork called Jace Clayton's newest mix under the name DJ /rupture one of the 10 best records of 2008. Uproot is a dark and throbbing mix of alien sounds; hardly the kind of thing you'd expect to hear at an outdoor dance party in front of thousands.

The Brooklyn-based DJ/blogger/journalist knows how to make unfamiliar sounds alluring, but Clayton told me he felt like the odd man out at the festival. We talked behind one of the festival's main stages after The Walkmen played and as M83 was warming up, and he told me he wasn't familiar with either group. After our interview, he bolted the festival grounds to track down some of Chicago's cumbia record shops.

Dancing to /Rupture at the Pitchfork Festival

You told me earlier that you've played a bunch of festivals abroad, but that this was your first in the U.S. Did you change anything from your usual festival set?

JC: I'm the only DJ at this festival. Three days of music, I'm the only solo DJ on a stage mixing records. That's never happened to me before. So that's the main difference. The lean here is toward "indie" guitar music and away from electronic or club music, which are the circles I usually play in. I have two types of sets. One is a more dancefloor-oriented, kinetic, "let's get bodies moving," "from the ear to the waist" type of thing. And then I also do experimental sets with a guitarist, Andy Moor from The Ex. That's improvised turntables and guitar.

When you're putting together a set for the radio show, you know you've got a dedicated audience on the radio or web. Do you have to do anything different here to hold the audience's attention?

What I do on the radio has nothing to do with what I do on stage. When I DJ, I use a mixer with effects built in and three turntables, and I'm deeply immersed in the music. On the radio show, I play one song after the other. I talk between songs; it's more of a forum for sharing things I find interesting.

There is an element of that in your DJ sets, though.

But on the radio, I can play 10 minutes of very quiet electro-acoustic music from Tehran and get on and talk about it after. I can't do that on stage.

Wait, how exactly do you go about finding electro-acoustic music from Tehran?

[Laughs] Open ears. I'm very curious about a lot of music, and I spent a lot of time scouring CD and vinyl shops when I was growing up. That's happening less these days, but when I travel, I always try to go and see what's new. Electro-acoustic music from Tehran is easy. That's on Sub Rosa, a medium to small European experimental label. Finding music in 2009 is a real mix of going somewhere and talking to people face to face, and then of course the online stuff.

Tell me about a couple of songs in your set that you know will get a reaction -- something that will get people moving, or really shock them.

I like to mix shocking songs in, but I have a good feeling about what will get people moving. A DJ has to be quite sensitive to issues of context. I played a cumbia remix with an Ol' Dirty Bastard sample. You can dip into these moments of recognition with a sample or well-known song, but what I like to do when I DJ is take that energy when people have those moments and pull them into something totally unfamiliar. From my point of view, a lot of being a good DJ is that give-and-take relationship with the audience. You don't want to alienate them, but at the same time, it's quite boring if you're only playing Madonna remixes with a Baltimore break underneath. Which many DJs can tour the world doing, but to me, that's just stagnant and uninteresting. It's okay, but only if you're using that familiarity as an entrance to go deeper. The most exciting thing is, when you can, you get 5,000 people dancing to something they've never, ever heard before.

I heard some music from your most recent record, Uproot, during your set. It's a slow, moody record. Will your next record be similar?

This November, I'm putting out a follow-up that's maybe a little more rough around the edges. Uproot was my most emotionally and sonically focused record. And part of that was that it was 100 percent legally licensed. So I couldn't put in the mainstream stuff. But I certainly keep moving. If you had caught me DJing five years ago, I would have sounded radically different.

People can hear some of the mixes you made online, right?

I did a mixtape called Gold Teeth Thief in 2001 that had a lot more mainstream stuff. That's still online for free. I did another one called Minesweeper Suite that's noisy drum-and-bass. But genres rise and fall, so I try to go for a dynamic that's beyond that. I think my fans understand that I'm a moving target, and they like that. Today's set was a show to get people moving in a park. Uproot was a headphone record or a car record. A subwoofer record.

Tell me a little bit about making Uproot. Where did you find the music on it, and did you try to keep to a specific tone?

The reason I started doing Uproot was that I realized I had a lot of friends doing music with a lot of bass and a lot of space, taking on these ideas of club music in the late 2000s and pushing that. First, I asked a cellist/composer I work with named Jenny Jones to write a string quartet for this mix, so that was the seed of Uproot. And the record just grew around that. I'm lucky in that I know a lot of people who send me music. The new record continues in that direction. I mixed it with my musical partner, Matt Shadetek, so we reached out to a bunch of Brooklyn people like Gang Gang Dance and Telepathe and did remixes of their songs. We have a Brooklyn vocalist called Jahdan Blakkamoore and we produced two tracks with him. I tried to pull in friends of mine. Elizabeth Alexander, who read at Obama's inauguration; she's on there, as well. So it's almost a hybrid between a mix and a producer album.

Have you seen anything here at the festival that made you excited?

Musically, I'm kind of an odd duck here, but the thing that's made me most excited is the lack of corporate sponsorship. That's really fantastic. If this were in Europe, there'd be beefy security with headsets on and this would be the X-beer company stage. That one would be the X-energy drink stage. And there would be a huge glowing soft-drink logo behind you while you DJ. Maybe not that bad, but the presence of big trans-national companies at festivals of this size. So to see this happening here in Chicago with nothing like that -- the local beer is sponsoring that -- translates to the atmosphere. It's just a day in the park.

There aren't even Pitchfork signs.

Yeah, that's kind of amazing. It's like the indie aesthetic writ large. This success story of a guy who started this in his basement which turned into a media juggernaut. But there's a DIY, you-can-do-it-too feeling. That's really encouraging.

Jace Clayton aka DJ /Rupture has been one of our favorite DJ's
for a very long time. He played a few impressive sets at
Spinoza's Undercity event at the old Halcyon space on Smith
Street around 2000-2002. In 2001, he put out the Gold Teeth Thief
mix, which caused a global stir and really put him on the map.
Since then, he's done several mixes for Tigerbeat6 and Violent
Turd. Although best known for his mixes, Jace is also a very
talented producer who has put out amazing albums for The
Agriculture and Tigerbeat. He is also one of the most interesting
music bloggers out there, and hosts an essential weekly radio
show on the greatest radio station in the world, WFMU. 2008 was a
big year for /Rupture. His "Uproot" mix CD on The Agriculture
garnered wide critical praise, making it into Pitchfork's top 10
albums of 2008 and Resident Advisor's top 5 compilations. Jace
hasn't played at set at The Bunker since he tore the roof off of
The Bunker 4 Year Anniversary Party at subTonic (one of the
final, and best parties we ever had down there).

party scene in the 90s, founded Phonomena Thursdays at subTonic
(the party that introduced us to that magical space) in 1999,
founded the Agriculture label with James Healy in 2003, showed
work at the Venice and Whitney Biennials, and recorded and toured
with a mind boggling list of notable experimental musicians.
Olive was one of the first people Spinoza met upon moving to NYC
12 years ago, and has remained a constant inspiration and good
friend ever since.

Raz Mesinai aka Badawi is another key member of The Agriculture
family. He first made a splash in the mid-90s as one half of the
seminal Sub Dub duo with John Ward. Their early releases are
still very much relevant and worth digging out (in fact, The
Agriculture re-released some of their best material earlier this
decade). His many albums as Badawi are some of the best
electronic dub and just plain otherworldly unclassifiable music
we've ever heard. He's gone on to play with many of the most
notorious downtown musicians, had his original music performed at
Carnegie Hall by Kronos Quartet, and has released albums on John
Zorn's Tzadik album. He has recently been embraced by the
dubstep community, and even released a remix on the latest Skull
Disco compilation. Tonight, he treats us to a rare live dub set
as Badawi.

profound composer whose reputation as a live performer and
soulful soother of the frenetic New Yorker has earned him a solid
following. His music takes off from instrumental hip-hop,

Kenneth James Gibson (best known as [a]pendics.shuffle) is a man
of many personas. Keeping up with him can be a time consuming,
yet rewarding venture into sound. As soon as you think you know
him and can grasp what's going on, he puts on yet another mask
and becomes something else. Always a surprise and never a let
down, he gives us what we want but donít expect. A rare stone in
todayís musical climate, Ken is rolling and collects no moss.
Over the years, [a]pendics has released music on a ton of labels,
including his own Adjunct, Dapayk's Mo's Ferry, Caro's Orac,
Agaric's We Are, Adultnapper's Ransom Note, Matt Tolfrey's
Leftroom, and Big Bully's Mineral. Ken has a ton of new

Bell Gardens is Ken's new project with Brian McBride of Stars of

Gerard Hanson (aka Convextion) hails from the unlikely
environments of Dallas, Texas. His productions have reflections
with the Basic Channel/Chain Reaction sound, and his inspirations
include Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Stefan Robbers, Red Planet and
Carl Craig. He released his first 12" in 1995. From 1995-1997, he
released 5 ep's, and then only 2 more in the next 6 years. Tracks
from his first releases were licensed to some big mix CD's and he
never got paid, which soured him on the msuic industry. After
that, other labels approached him but just wanted more of the
same and didn't really seem to understand his sound. After a
couple years of making music that nobody got to hear, the label
Down Low convinced him to start releasing his music again. His
current live set draws material from both his deep techno
Convextion alias, and his electro-edged E.R.P. (Event Related
Potential). Gerard remained willingly anonymous from the tieme
of his debut in 1995 until his debut European Live performance
in London in April 2006. While he occasionally comes out to play
amazing events like the Labyrinth festival in Japan and Bloc
Weekend in the UK, his live performances are still quite rare,
and we are honored that he has agreed to play for us at The
Bunker.

I speak not of the Obamas’ fire but of the candlepower of Multiverse, an LED light sculpture by Leo Villareal newly installed in the National Gallery of Art.

“This is the best party we’ve ever had here,” Fleischman said, heading for the moving walkways running back and forth within the twinkly Multiverse tunnel that took us to the dessert tables on the other side. What they usually get is far more boring, he noted, all Supreme Court judges and lobbyists at a formal, sit-down, black-tie dinner. And the DJ isn’t usually composer James Healy, a sometime Villareal collaborator who created a live mix of “early techno,” as Force put it.

Double Dutch Finals for the Triboro

Double Dutch, which involves jumping through a daunting skein of twin ropes twirling simultaneously, was said to have been brought to New York centuries ago by Dutch settlers to the burgeoning town of New Amsterdam. On more modern city streets and sidewalks, double Dutch evolved into a game shared by generations of New Yorkers, primarily girls.

Several new releases are featured this month including the opening track Untitled #175 by Francisco López and Lawrence English, from the album HB on French label Baskaru. Also new from Baskaru is Live Journeys, a selection of live performances by mixed-media band Symbiosis Orchestra.

The podcast title Mistress of Ceremonies is a track from the new Joe Frawley release Ritual Research. An extremely enjoyable listening experience, the album is available for free download through the Clinical Archives net label (www.archive.org/details/ca195_jf).

From our friends at The Agriculture we have two exciting new releases to look forward to in February. Rich Panciera under his Lloop moniker explores elements of dubstep, hip hop and drum and bass with the album 60 Hertz. Kacy Wiggins aka quiet personal electronics (aka qpe), releases 'the one true constant', a new album with a downtempo ambient hip hop groove. Also from qpe we hear a track from the album Boolean Logic, which I refer to as my all-time-favourite pre-cyclone music.

From Australia, we hear a track from Rhythmic Movement Disorder (Room40), the long awaited debut solo release from Robbie Avenaim, a luminary figure in the Australian experimental and improvised music scene.

We also hear a golden oldie, 'That That Revolves', a Severed Heads track that features on the companion CD to a new book release entitled "Experimental Music: Audio Explorations In Australia". Book chapters have been written by 'artists, producers and participants in alternative music-making' in Australia including contributions from Julian Knowles, Shannon O'Neill, Ian Andrews and Jim Denley, to mention a few, edited by Gail Priest. A definite must have for those interested in the history of experimental and electronic music in Australia. I was thrilled that Punos rated a mention (thanks Seb Chan).

Mosquitoe's ‘Harmonic Convergence’

Male mosquitoes are attracted by the flight sounds of conspecific females. In males only, the antennal flagellum bears a large number of long hairs and is therefore said to be plumose. As early as 1855, it was proposed that this remarkable antennal anatomy served as a sound-receiving structure. In the present study, the sound-induced vibrations of the antennal flagellum in male and female Aedes aegypti were compared, and the functional significance of the flagellar hairs for audition was examined. In both males and females, the antennae are resonantly tuned mechanical systems that move as simple forced damped harmonic oscillators when acoustically stimulated. The best frequency of the female antenna is around 230 Hz; that of the male is around 380 Hz, which corresponds approximately to the fundamental frequency of female flight sounds. The antennal hairs of males are resonantly tuned to frequencies between approximately 2600 and 3100 Hz and are therefore stiffly coupled to, and move together with, the flagellar shaft when stimulated at biologically relevant frequencies around 380 Hz. Because of this stiff coupling, forces acting on the hairs can be transmitted to the shaft and thus to the auditory sensory organ at the base of the flagellum, a process that is proposed to improve acoustic sensitivity. Indeed, the mechanical sensitivity of the male antenna not only exceeds the sensitivity of the female antenna but also those of all other arthropod movement receivers studied so far.

When DJ/rupture, aka Jace Clayton, released his brilliant pan-global mix Uproot, he also made available the companion album Uproot: The Ingredients, an unedited collection of the mix's source material. This was a generous move, and a bold one, for it risks allowing the listener backstage to watch the master alchemist at work. Fortunately, Uproot: The Ingredients does more than simply confirm that Clayton owns a well-used passport and an impeccable set of ears; it also provides fresh insight into his distinctive and powerful musical vision.

Clayton recognizes global bass culture to be a complex system of interlocking burrows, and on Uproot he revels in exploring as many hidden passageways as possible. Starting primarily with dubstep and ragga sources, Uproot branches outward to reconcile such far-flung pieces as Filastine's jittery "Hungry Ghost (Instrumental)" and Ekkehard Ehlers' elegiac "Plays John Cassavetes". And, particularly after hearing The Ingredients, it is a marvel to witness how intuitively Clayton allows the mix's various rhythms and displaced vocals to linger and echo back on one another, as if his only role is to expose all those secret links and shared roots that have been buried in plain sight all along. --Matthew Murphy

"Uproot is a different animal entirely, a slithering, reptilian creature content to exist beneath the brush. It’s not trying to be clever. It just wants to move the crowd. Returning to Brooklyn after seven years in Barcelona, Rupture has released his most approachable mix yet, blending UK dubstep, German minimalism, and a dozen other sounds from Australia, Sweden, Brazil, and of course Brooklyn. Unlike his previous manic, pummelling mixes, which tend to bombard listeners with so many ideas, Uproot is an assured, laid-back affair. No batteries of breakcore here. This is a record that is just as comfortable on the dance floor as it is in the study.

Rupture was kind enough to include a second disc with Uproot called Ingredients. It’s a humble move that allows the listener to hear the cuts he used to create Uproot in their original, unmixed form.

Dear DJs: Do this from now on.

Not only do we get to enjoy the unadulterated tracks, we gain a deeper appreciation for Rupture’s creativity and finesse. For instance, the innocuous opening synth riff on Clouds’ “Too Much” becomes a menacing salvo when matched with the rumbling guitar distortion of Maga Bo’s “Homeboys”. I checked out Ingredients after a few listens to Uproot, and perhaps this colors my opinion, but Rupture mixes songs in such a way that hearing them in any other context just feels wrong."

In the early 90’s he was an active member of the infamous Williamsburg scene, producing ambient events throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan. He was a founding member of We™, one of the most influential electronic acts to emerge from the U.S. scene in the ninties. As a joke, he gave birth to the term “illbient” and has been credited with founding the illbient movement. To listen to the sound pieces for the documentary video, check out the video clips here. The mix was for Leo Villareal's light installation at the National Gallery. James (Escape Arts, Natural Sphere) runs the Agriculture with DJ Olive.

The beginning of the installation of Leo Villareal's LED (light-emitting diode) project designed for the Gallery's Concourse. Villareal's work features movement and light, qualities that make this installation particularly well-suited for the moving walkway between the East and West Buildings, a subterranean area through which thousands of people pass daily. The installation features approximately 40,000 LED nodes that run through channels along the entire length of the connecting link. The artist will program sequences using custom-designed software to create abstract configurations of light through electronic circuitry. Villareal's programming both instructs the light and allows for an element of chance. While it is possible that a pattern will repeat during a viewer's experience, it is highly unlikely. Still, the eye will seek patterns in the motion, a perceptual effect of the hypnotic trailing lights.

"After the Beethoven, DJ Olive, a turntable improviser, initiated a chiming drone that segued into Nicole Lizée’s “Cryptograms.” Layering fuzz and crackle, throbbing pulsations and snatches of recorded speech, DJ Olive fashioned a teeming sonic environment. Mr. Haimovitz’s composed lines clambered through the din, offering a running commentary.

Here, performing in an idiom intended for loudspeakers, Mr. Haimovitz and DJ Olive sounded like equal partners. Still better was Tod Machover’s “VinylCello.” Mr. Machover, long a leading innovator in musical technology, is also a cellist. Surely that explained why he was able to showcase Mr. Haimovitz’s ardent lyricism and DJ Olive’s sharp reflexes with equal assurance."

DJ Olive’s Gregor Asch originally emerged out of the same Crooklyn Dub Consortium scene that typified the illbient period of bass-centric frequencies during the ’90s, coming up with very early emissions from the likes of the Bug, Spectre, and bass-orientalists like We and Badawi. He’s since moved down the two parallel paths that forged illbient, preferring to separate his records into straight-out break-beat experiments via labels like the Agriculture or textbook ambient compositions, which have emerged with increasing regularity via Australian label Room 40. Triage follows 2006’s Sleep and constitutes another nuanced edition into the warm drones that wouldn’t be out of place on a Stars of the Lid album. Like SOTL, Triage’s hour-long evolution is intended as a soundtrack for sleep, and so the sounds that emerge in the wash of warm Moog and turntable samples, not to mention occasional light percussion and a trumpet that brings to mind Miles Davis’s In a Silent Way, never interrupt the fall backwards into unconsciousness so much as accentuate it. True to its promise, this album really does send its listeners tumbling softly into dreams. (Room 40)

DJ Olive: Wall Street Journal

At a packed downtown Manhattan nightclub earlier this month, the cellist Matt Haimovitz teamed up with DJ Olive in an eclectic mash-up that veered from a Beethoven cello sonata to a strange duet that set Mr. Haimovitz's frenetic bowing against the turntable's hallucinatory electronic sounds. A crowd sipped beers and looked spellbound as Mr. Haimovitz improvised seamless transitions between movements, building up to a fully improvised cadenza. "There are certain movements where, as it would happen in the 18th century, we make it up on the spot," Mr. Haimovitz says.

"DJ Olive the Audio Janitor (Gregor Asch) applies his skills as a DJ and turntablist to create atmospheric multimedia events that broaden conventional definitions of listening to music. Delivering both danceable bass-heavy sets and quieter, ambient soundscapes to large audiences in clubs, warehouses, and music festivals, Olive’s musical aesthetic features layered and looped urban noises reﬂecting the chaotic character of his Brooklyn, New York, home base. He uses computers and turntables to appropriate and combine incongruous audio clips—ranging from street sounds to previously recorded world music, drum ‘n’ bass, hip-hop, and dub—into songs that contain trancelike, melodic, groovy logics.

As a musician who composes, produces, distributes, and performs his collaged sound projects, Olive sees his events, which incorporate visual elements such as light shows and video screenings, as “voyages” that are at once performance art and positive, community-building political actions. His projects unfold on massive scale, transcending the typical club environment by harnessing the transformative powers of sound through colossal— and in at least one work literally global—takeovers. In 1997, as part of their opera Quark Soup, Olive’s collective Multipolyomni offered participants The Solar Drama: a view of the sun perpetually rising, broadcast live from 127 consecutive locations during one of Earth’s rotations, as seventy-seven performers and artists hosted a gigantic sound installation.

Olive’s visionary approach to entertaining developed during the 1990s as he pioneered an electronic music scene centered around what is now called roof music. For the 2002 Whitney Biennial, Olive organized Roof Music: Sunrise on a Rooftop in Brooklyn, a sound installation that sought the cultural unification of all participants. Complementing the throbbing dance music, he alternately held “sleeping pill” events—quiet, sonically ambient sleepovers—to promote relaxation. Olive has written a new sleeping pill composition for the 2008 Biennial, to be played inside an installation offering viewers a cozy space to close their eyes and kick up their feet. Equating these soft, soothing sounds with medicinal healing, he seeks to provide comfort and stress relief to his audience. Though his complex sampling still reflects a tension implicit to city dwelling, Olive’s music grows more hypnotic as he becomes increasingly interested in uniting people." TRINIE DALTON

"Compiled in September 2007 but released in 2008, Uproot was less about Jace Clayton’s considerable DJ-ing skills -- though he still plays off three decks -- and more about creating a mood. Full-on ambient at times, contributors include chamber musician Jenny Jones and Dutty Artz labelmate Matt Shadetek, but although you're always very aware while listening to Uproot that you're dealing with a man abundant in both talent and taste, it's never turntablism for the sake of showing off; more the creation of space and texture through blending and recontextualising. Most musical genres rapidly divide, mutating into a handful of different strains. Punk, for example, split into categories such as thrash, straightedge, oí. Ambient, however, may become the genre that expands to fill the universe. From the original warblings of Eno and Aphex Twin, ambient DJs now spin everything from ethnic chants to Schoenberg. Ambient has come to resemble The Face's facetious description, "anything remotely electronic that lasts longer than 10 minutes and has less than 80 beats per minute." Which, perhaps coincidentally, is also a good definition of Muzak.

In the history of cryptography, Room 40 (formally NID25) was the room in the Admiralty which was the first location of the British cryptography effort during World War I.

Tell us about your label...

::ROOM40:: is an imprint and multiarts organisation. The imprint is primarily focused on releasing material such as improvisations, installation soundtracks and themed recorded works. ::ROOM40:: has released material by artists such as John Chantler, Scanner, David Toop, DJ Olive, I/O3, Frost and we have also curated several compilation releases including EMIT one for QUT.

What do you think is the most influential Australian album of all time?

An impossible question to answer – so many high points from so many genres and movements. I like to think I have a wide-ranging taste, so answering something like this is always difficult, if not simply impossible.

Who/where/when was the first local gig you ever attended?

I seriously can’t recall. I remember seeing bands like Regurgitator and a lot of the Valve related acts when I first started reviewing for magazines in Brisbane such as Time Off. I do know I’ve seen somewhere in the vicinity of 1000 bands/artists since first heading out at the tender age of 17. So many impressive groups too!

Describe your most memorable Australian music moment?

There’s been so many - probably too many to make sense of really... too many late nights.

What is the most crucial advice you could give a local artist seeking success?

John Zorn once said something like ‘respect the work, otherwise no one else will’ – that’s a sound idea and one I can recommend to other people. Other than that just be willing to work hard and face up to the creative and logistically challenges that will inevitably get in your way.

If you could have signed any act in Australia (part or present), who would it be?

Again an impossible scenario to access…there are just so many creative people making music in this country.

What do you think is the most important issue facing Australian music today?

The redefinition of the fringe/independent music scene verses the shifting role of major record labels/distributors – a global issue to be sure.

Prior to issuing the full-length Fearsome Jewel on Kompakt in 2003, New Zealand producer Andrew Thomas was responsible for a limited-edition release (100 copies) on Involve titled So You Wanna Be a (Death) Star. Thomas' first Kompakt venture was a significant improvement over his obscure, glitch-inflected debut, with most tracks falling somewhere between Ulf Lohmann's Because Before and Dettinger's Oasis. He fell into the Cologne label's "pop ambient" division with little trouble. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide.

The Irrestible Force

Writer, DJ and composer Mixmaster Morris was one of the major players in new-school ambient electronica and its emergence from the dance world in the late 80's and early 90's. A passionate, kooky campaigner for the ambient cause ("it's time to lie down and be counted"), he first picked up a following via stints as a chill-out DJ in the early days of the U.K. acid house scene. His live shows combined looped sounds and samples from vinyl records with live electronic instruments with which he created layered, free-form mixes of sound and mood. As Morris told David Toop in the book Ocean Of Sound: "We've had sixty, seventy years of making records. That's stage one. Now we sample them".

It was a logical progression to take these techniques into a recording studio, which he did under the name Irresistible Force. Released on Casper Pound's iconic ambient techno label Rising High Records, Flying High is superior post-rave ambient that’s by turns playful, transportive and awe-inspiring. Elements of Tangerine Dream, Pink Floyd and Jean-Michel Jarre are in evidence but deployed only tastefully and sparingly, leaving plenty of room for original, inventive hi-tech mindscapes. A sequenced kick drum appears on occasion to anchor things down but only rarely does it actually rise above the echoing ripples of melody and richly detailed atmospherics. Track titles like "Sky High", "Downstream" and "Moonrise" are a good indicator of the mindspace Morris occupies, though the plainly titled "Symphony In E" provides the album’s most striking moment. Seemingly out of nowhere emerges a simple, hypnotic violin phrase which Morris then pairs with a spastic, wobbly bass line to startling effect.

The classic It's Tomorrow Already is the third IR album, released long after the Rising High label had sadly folded. Here Morris has found a new home at the experimental breakbeat/hip hop label Ninja Tune and the album finds him in spellbinding form. Interestingly, the template here is quite different. Once it was ambient techno, now it's the equally fertile and far out fringes of hip hop. Highlights include the lazy space funk workouts "12 O'clock" and "Nepalese Bliss". Morris has also recorded the Dreamfish albums with German ambient maestro Pete Namlook.
